It’s a beautiful fall day, and you step out of your home, turn around and look at your asphalt roof. Suddenly, you notice patches of color missing from the rooftop. These patches affecting your roof could be due to roof blisters.
At Nuss Construction Company, the top home improvement contractor in the region, talks about these issues in detal.
What Are Roof Blisters?
Roof blisters are basically areas on your asphalt roof where the granules have been removed, not by impact, but because of a chemical reaction within the shingles. Depending on the type of shingle, the asphalt in this scenario has released a gas that caused bubbles to form on the topmost layer of the shingle: the granules. Eventually, wear and tear will rub out the loosened granules and asphalt from this section, revealing the matting within the shingle itself.
Causes of Blistering
Old shingles usually blister because they were assembled by hand. The components of each shingle were put together without an exact ratio in mind, so this usually led to chemical reactions that resulted in the blisters.
Blistering in newer shingles, however, are not caused by this imbalance. That’s because most of these shingles are assembled with the aid of newer technology, which ensured the ratio of materials upon assembly. Instead, the cause of blistering in these new shingles is improper ventilation.
Bad roofing ventilation can cause these blisters because chemicals react to heat. When the heat within your roof excites the ingredients within the shingles, the materials release gases, leading to a shingle blister.
Issues With Blistering
The biggest and most obvious issue with blistering is that the blisters mess with the appearance of your roof. There won’t be a danger of leaks forming since most asphalt shingles are piled on top of each other. The real issue, however, is the fact that your roof is badly ventilated. Consider blistering asphalt shingles a warning sign of this issue.
