Our home improvement customers like to ask us all about the importance of certain parts of their roofs. Once in a while, we get questions about the flashing. Not many people understand just what the roof flashing does and how important it is in keeping their homes safe and secure. That’s why Nuss Construction Company has put together a short primer on just how important roof flashing really is.
What Is Roof Flashing?
First off, let’s get the mystery of flashing out of the way. Flashing is usually made of metal and is placed on junctions throughout the surface of your roof. These flashings are placed there to seal these seams.
What Does It Do?
These roof junctions sealed by the flashing are basically gaps. Think of them as holes on the surface of your roof, created specifically because of how the portions of the roof are put together. These gaps are unavoidable and expose the interior of your roofing to potential leaks. Flashing closes them up and prevents the possibility of leaks.
Which Parts Specifically Get Flashing?
There are plenty of gaps throughout a standard roof, but the most obvious ones are the portion where two different sections of the roof meet (i.e. roofing corners). Then, there are also the sections where the roof meets a wall. Since you can’t just spackle a roof tile to the wall, this area needs to be flashed. The same goes for chimneys and skylights.
