While most companies will maintain a traditional office setup, there’s no doubt the flexible work setup is here to stay, making a home office a smart investment right now. And, if you’re considering setting up a home office, the first thing you need to do is find out how much floor space you’ll need to do your work.
The ideal maximum floor space would ultimately depend on your job and industry. However, it’d be helpful to keep in mind the recommended minimum space requirements for home office features.
Minimum Space Requirements
- Office desk – Freestanding desks should have a width of 48 to 72 inches, depth of 24 to 36 inches and a height of roughly 30 inches. If your deck is near the back wall or any bookshelves, make sure to leave 33 to 36 inches of free space between the desk and the wall or bookshelf to ensure you can still move around and access important documents when you need them.
- Computer peripherals – The majority of office workers prefer laptops, but those in highly technical roles need the extra processing power of a desktop. If you’re using a desktop, there should be a space of two inches between your thigh and the keyboard tray while sitting. And, if you prefer laptops, make sure your desk is located near a power source, and nothing’s blocking it.
- Filing cabinets – File cabinets take up a lot of space. A standard 2-drawer, letter-size file cabinet would be at least 15 inches wide, 30 inches high and 29 inches deep.
It can be easy to get caught up with the technical specifications of your new home office. However, don’t forget that the end goal is to make sure there’s enough space in your home office for your key work activities. If you’re having trouble estimating the amount of space you’ll need, don’t hesitate to consult a home improvement contractor.
