“Leave it to the pros” is perhaps the most often heard advice you get from anyone in the remodeling and home improvement business. It’s good advice, too, considering the benefits one can derive from it. However, there are times when you should not listen to your remodeling contractor.
Not Doing Your Own Research
A common mistake among inexperienced homeowners is saving or clipping a photo of a bathroom design and telling the contractor that they want what’s in the photo. It takes some time to find the materials, style and fixtures needed to build that particular design, which may take longer depending on several factors, such as availability or if certain components need to be custom-made. Doing your own research can help maximize your project’s planning time.
Remodelers Can’t Read Your Mind
Whether it’s a roof replacement or kitchen remodeling, all the choices involved – materials, styles and colors – will be ultimately up to you. It is perfectly fine to leave everything to your contractors, but they will be designing your remodeling project to what they perceive as what you want.
This is why planning the remodeling project is a critical stage that you should be involved in. Don’t be shy to speak up when you think a color looks off, or if you prefer contemporary-looking kitchen cabinets over traditional ones. Don’t expect them to be immediately on the same page as you are.
Not All Remodelers Have a Designer
There is a big difference between a consultant and a designer. Most contractors have consultants who may be well-versed in their products, but do not necessarily have the training or talent for design. If you already have the resources of a designer at your disposal or if you’re a designer yourself, then all the better. However, you will want to hire a design/build contractor to make sure that your project will be properly designed in all aspects: structure, aesthetics and in compliance with building codes.
